In the Edo period, sumptuary laws pushed commoners toward subtle browns and greys. Dyers responded with the shijūhaccha ('forty-eight browns'), each with its own name (kabacha, kogecha, susucha…). Cha-iro is the plain-vanilla brown at the center of that family.
