Origin

In Edo-era Japan, sumptuary laws forbade commoners from wearing bright colors, so townspeople invented shijūhaccha hyaku-nezu — 'forty-eight browns and a hundred greys' — subtle variations that were technically legal but visually rich. Sakura-nezu is a favorite from that culture.
