Yamabuki are single-petal yellow flowers that carpet Japanese mountainsides in late spring. Because their color resembles unminted gold, 'yamabuki-iro' became Edo-period slang for a stack of gold coins — as in the samurai-drama line, 'a box of yamabuki-colored candies'.
